Huawei awards Wits postgraduate bursaries
Huawei South Africa has granted bursaries valued at nearly R2-million to nine University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) postgraduate students studying information technology and engineering courses.
As part of its wider information and communication technology (ICT) Talent Ecosystem programme, as well as its Mandela Month programme, to grow and support youth in ICT, Huawei aims to assist students in upskilling and preparing for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and the digital economy.
This followed last month’s launch of a free fifth-generation (5G) training course for postgraduate ICT students at Wits.
“Wits is an important academic partner for Huawei, with a shared vision for 4IR, in which technologies like 5G, artificial intelligence and the cloud will shape economic and social development. “We therefore want to support students who are studying these courses so that they can positively contribute to growing the local digital economy,” says Huawei deputy CEO Kian Chen.
“By enhancing industry-academic cooperation, we, as an international ICT company, hope to make our contribution to achieving the country’s development goals,” he adds.
“Wits has taken the strategic decision to be a 45% postgraduate university by 2022 precisely because of the realisation that the future lies in the hands of those who can create skills that count. “Huawei has made a breakthrough with a practice that drives conversions of knowledge beyond expectations,” says Wits director of postgraduate affairs Professor Robert Muponde.
